Fundamental Challenges to Scale Up

Main content start

Turning academic discoveries in energy storage into at-scale commercial products requires huge financial investment with a long horizon for returns and carries a high risk that results in the lab will not hold up at scale. This makes investing in new energy storage technologies difficult, and as a result there may be promising new technologies that could work well at scale that do not receive sufficient investment. StorageX aims to streamline the scale up process in energy storage through:

  • Developing a "science of synthesis", particularly for complex battery materials such as mixed transition metal oxides, in order to understand how processing conditions independently affect various materials properties and how these determine full-cell performance
  • Developing sustainable financing tools and strategies tailored for the energy storage industry to appropriately quantify risk and facilitate private investment
